while also experimenting with new forms of celebrating the Buddha’s message.

Sacred Bonfire
Third Sunday of January • 1:00 pm
See how locals offer their wishes and hopes for the New Year. After a short service in the main hall, the holy fire is lit in a highly detailed ritual called gomataki. Prayers written on wooden tablets are tossed into the sacred flames.
Autumn Festival
Second Sunday of November• 1:00 pm
Witness the arrival of masked tengu - mythical forest creatures - as ancient traditions are carried into the modern day. Rooted in Japanese mythology and local customs, this is one of Kyoto’s most intriguing events.
New Year Bell Ringing
New Year’s Eve• Midnight
Ring in the new year with the Japanese tradition of bell ringing and well-wishing.
