Start your time in Arashiyama with a visit to Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple
If you have at least a half day to explore the area, we highly recommend that you begin your time in Arashiyama at Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple. Arriving by taxi or bus is the best way to do this. From our temple, you can walk downhill through the Saga-Torimoto preserved village streets to reach the bamboo forest, Togetsukyo Bridge, and the main Arashiyama area.
By Taxi
5 minutes from JR Saga-Arashiyama Station• Approx 1,500 yen
The easiest way to visit our temple is by taxi. You can hail a cab anywhere in the city and ride out to Otagi Nenbutsuji, but it may be expensive. Consider taking the JR train to Saga-Arashiyama Station, and then getting a taxi on either side of the station. Simply tell the driver “Otagi Nenbutsuji” or show them 愛宕念仏寺 and they will know where to go. From JR Saga-Arashiyama Station, the taxi ride will be about 5 minutes and cost approximately 1,500 yen.
By Bus
Approx 25 minutes from Arashiyama• 230 yen per person
From JR Saga-Arashiyama Station, walk west 10 minutes to the main street in Arashiyama. From the Nonomiya bus stop (map), take bus #94 northward bound for Kiyotaki and get off at Otagi Dera Mae bus stop.
Bus stops are also available in front of Hankyu Arashiyama Station and Randen Streetcar Station.
By Car
Approx 40 minutes from downtown Kyoto
Limited parking is available for those arriving by private vehicle.
By Foot
Approx 1 hour from JR Saga-Arashiyama Station
Please note that most of the walk to Otagi Nenbutsuji is uphill.
